St. Patrick’s Day Safety Tips

St. Patrick’s Day Safety Tips

Posted on March 14, 2019 by melissafriemoth

“Top of the morning to ya!” as my dad used to say every St Patrick’s Day as I was growing up. My maiden name is McMillen which comes from a very strong Irish heritage, so St Patrick’s Day has always been a special holiday for me. Unfortunately, it can be a dangerous one too.

According to the NHTSA fatal-crash data, in 2016, 60 people were killed in drunk-driving accidents over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday weekend.

If you will be celebrating the holiday at a bar, tavern, or celebration that will include alcohol, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Designate a sober driver or have a back-up plan before leaving the party.
  • If you don’t have a designated driver, call a taxi, ride service, or a friend.
  • Never let a friend drive drunk. Arrange a safe way for them to get home.
  • Don’t ride in a vehicle with an intoxicated driver.
  • Always buckle up. It’s your best defense against drunk drivers.

Since St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, also remember green food or beverages may stain your teeth. You may want to avoid these items if you have any important meetings on Monday morning.

May the luck of the Irish be with you!
